Friends,
I've been talking about economic whiplash since January. Between rising prices, a global trade war, and massive government layoffs, the state of our economy right now is, well, stressful.
The worst part? There isn't much we can do right now to stop any of this. Therefore, I want to suggest a different course of action - self care. I understand how interconnected self care is with finances, but here are five actions each of us can take to help manage our economic anxiety:
- Focus on What You Can Control – You can’t control trade policies or market fluctuations, but you can manage your spending, savings, and mindset. Start by assessing your financial situation and make healthy adjustments where needed.
- Stay Informed, but Set Boundaries: Constant negative news cycles can increase stress. Stay educated on how policy changes may impact you, but limit doom-scrolling to protect your mental well-being.
- Anchor Yourself in Your Financial Values – Times of uncertainty are an opportunity to reaffirm what truly matters in your financial life. Whether it’s generosity, sustainability, or stability, let your core values guide your financial decisions rather than fear.
- Support Local and Ethical Businesses – Tariffs can disrupt global supply chains, but local businesses may provide alternative products and services. Better yet, businesses that source their materials and products locally are typically a more justice-aligned choice.
- Lean on Community Resources – Economic uncertainty doesn’t have to be faced alone. Tap into community networks for shared resources, financial literacy support, and emotional encouragement.
When it comes to the economy, we are all in this together. Remember you are not alone. If Reverend Money can be of service to you or a member of your community through our 1:1 Educational Sessions or our workshop offerings, please do not hesitate to reach out.
